Track 01 — The Fluency Track

Stop studying Mandarin.
Start speaking it.

Most students spend years learning Mandarin and still can't hold a real conversation. The Fluency Track is built to fix that — for any motivated student ready to do the work.

Does this sound familiar?

If any of these land, you're in the right place. This program was built for exactly this student.

Who This Is For

Any motivated student ready to actually speak.

The Fluency Track is for students who are done with slow progress and want a direct path to real conversational Mandarin. Whether you're starting from scratch, picking up where a class left off, or trying to activate knowledge you already have — this program meets you where you are.

This is not a group class. It's one-on-one, tailored to your specific starting point, your goals, and the way you actually learn.

🎓
High school students (ages 13–18)
The ideal window for building fluency that lasts a lifetime. Strong motivation is required — this program rewards students who show up.
🔄
Students who've tried other approaches
Weekend school, apps, classroom Chinese — all useful, all limited. This program is built to take you further than any of them.
🔇
Students with the "freeze" problem
You know more than you can access. The words are there — you just shut down when it's time to use them. Breaking that pattern is exactly what this program does.
🎯
Goal-driven learners
Travel, family connection, cultural identity, career — whatever's driving you, this program gives you a clear path to get there.

Why Other Approaches Fall Short

Most Mandarin programs are designed to teach the language. Not to make you speak it.

What most programs do

  • Focus on vocabulary lists and character memorization
  • Classroom settings where speaking out loud feels risky
  • Native tutors who learned Mandarin from birth — and can't explain why it's hard for English speakers
  • No real strategy for building conversational confidence
  • Progress measured by tests, not by actual conversations

What the Fluency Track does

  • Uses ESL / second-language acquisition methodology — purpose-built for English speakers learning Mandarin
  • One-on-one sessions where every minute is about your progress
  • Taught by someone who learned Mandarin as an adult and knows what the struggle feels like from the inside
  • Speaking confidence built from session one
  • Progress measured by real conversations — not test scores

The Method

How the Fluency Track works.

01

Speak with Confidence

We start with tones and pronunciation — the foundation most programs skip. When you can produce sounds correctly, you stop second-guessing yourself before you speak. Confidence follows competence, and this is where it begins.

02

Speaking & Literacy Link

Reading and speaking are taught together — the way language actually works in the brain. You learn to think in Mandarin, not translate from English. This is what separates functional fluency from classroom knowledge.

03

The Immersion Loop

Between sessions, you build daily contact with Mandarin — podcasts, shows, conversations, reading. Seth builds a custom immersion plan around your life. Language learning happens between sessions, not just during them.

What You'll Achieve

From frozen to fluent.

  • Hold real conversations in Mandarin — without freezing
  • Respond naturally without translating in your head first
  • Reach CEFR B2 conversational fluency
  • Read and write at a functional level
  • Use Mandarin in real life — with family, in travel, at work
  • Build a skill you'll carry for the rest of your life

What progress looks like

Month 1 Tones click. You start producing sounds correctly. First real sentences spoken out loud with confidence.
Month 3 The freeze starts to break. Responses come faster. Reading and speaking reinforce each other. Immersion feels natural.
Month 6 Real conversations. You start reaching for Mandarin instead of avoiding it. The language starts to feel like yours.
Month 12+ Genuine B2 fluency. Mandarin is no longer something you're learning — it's something you speak.
Seth Clippard, PhD — Fearless Chinese

Your Tutor

Seth learned Mandarin as an adult. He knows exactly what you're up against.

Seth Clippard, PhD spent 20+ years living in Taiwan and learned Mandarin as a non-native adult. He has studied five languages, taught at university level in both the US and Taiwan, directed a language center, and translated books from Chinese to English.

His key advantage: ESL training. Most Chinese tutors teach the way they personally acquired Mandarin — from birth. Seth uses second-language acquisition methodology, purpose-built for English speakers. That's a fundamentally different approach, and it produces fundamentally different results.

Common Questions

What students and parents ask first.

How is this different from a regular Mandarin tutor? +
Most tutors — even excellent ones — teach the way they personally learned Mandarin. If they're native speakers, that means a first-language approach, which isn't how English speakers acquire a second language. Seth's ESL training and his own experience learning Mandarin as an adult give him a fundamentally different toolkit. He doesn't just know Mandarin — he knows how to teach it to someone who thinks in English.
My student is a complete beginner. Is that okay? +
Absolutely. The Fluency Track is designed to meet students wherever they are — including at zero. Starting from scratch can actually be an advantage, since there are no bad habits to undo. Seth will assess your student's starting point on the discovery call and set a realistic roadmap from there.
How long does it take to reach fluency? +
Most students begin having real conversations within 3–6 months and reach functional B2 fluency within 12 months of consistent work. This depends on starting point, motivation, and commitment to the daily immersion practice between sessions. Seth will give you a realistic picture on the discovery call.
We've already tried other tutors. Why would this be different? +
The most common reason other tutors don't work for English-speaking students is methodology — not effort. Native-speaker tutors teach how they learned, which is very different from how your student needs to learn. Seth's ESL background changes the equation entirely.
How does pricing work? +
Seth discusses pricing on the discovery call, after learning about the student's situation, goals, and starting point. Every student's needs are different, and Seth makes offers accordingly. The call is the first step — and it's free.
Do you work with students outside the US? +
All sessions are conducted online via video call, so geography is no barrier. Seth works with students across the US and internationally. Time zone compatibility is something to discuss on the discovery call.
